Commercial Licensing

Licensing Sablebadger 3D Models

Most of my 3D models are published under a Non-Commercial license across Thingiverse, MyMiniFactory, and the rest. That means you’re free to print them for yourself, your gaming group, or as a gift, no license required. What you can’t do without permission is sell them, in electronic or physical form, whether the original was a free download or a paid one.

“NonCommercial means not primarily intended for or directed towards commercial advantage or monetary compensation. For purposes of this Public License, the exchange of the Licensed Material for other material subject to Copyright and Similar Rights by digital file-sharing or similar means is NonCommercial provided there is no payment of monetary compensation in connection with the exchange.”  –Creative Commons definition.

In plain terms: don’t sell copies, printed or digital, without a license from me. A few situations gamers actually run into, and where you stand on each:

  • Gifting a print to a friend? Go for it, that’s not a commercial exchange.
  • Prototyping your own game design using my terrain or components? Print away while you’re testing. The license only comes into play if the finished game goes to market with physical prints of my designs included, whether packaged in the box or sold separately, that needs a commercial license or contract with me first. If your game sells without any of my printed models in it, prototyping with them earlier doesn’t require a license on its own.
  • Bringing prints along as demo terrain at your local game store? Not just fine, encouraged! Attribution is appreciated but not required for this one. Selling the prints at the store, though, would need a license.
  • Using models as prizes for a tournament or game night? Also fine,as long as they’re given away and not sold.

Doing something that doesn’t fit one of these? Just ask, happy to clarify.

Want to sell prints of my models? Here’s how.

I offer two commercial licenses through my Patreon. Both give you the right to sell physical prints of licensed designs, online and in person, for as long as your  membership stays active. Cancel, and the license ends with it, simple as that.

Both licenses also come with full membership access on top of the commercial rights themselves, not just a license, but everything else my Patreon supporters get:

  • A massive archive of years of models, searchable and previewable in 3D
  • Access to my apps for creating custom items (tokens, bases, and more)
  • New releases every month
  • Priority on model requests

Merchant Single, try it out

Good if there’s just one item you want to sell. A single “item” can include several related pieces, a house and its matching roof count as one item, and a themed set like the Facets dice count as one item too. Pick your item, and you’re covered to sell physical prints of it for as long as you’re subscribed.

Merchant Full, the whole catalog

Everything I’ve published, past and present, across this Patreon, MyMiniFactory, and Thingiverse, plus the full Patreon archive, is covered. If you’re running a shop rather than testing one item, this is the one that makes sense.

Merchant Full also includes the Champion-level extras: access to the Champions-only Discord channel, and one Customization Request per month, your name, a logo, or a suggested tweak worked into an existing model or that month’s release.

A few ground rules

Credit SableBadger3D as the artist in your listings. Physical prints only, selling the digital files themselves isn’t covered under either license. Send me a link once your store’s live, I’d love to see it.

Current pricing and full tier details live on Patreon.
